Dirk Nowitzki Foundation Expands Fall Food Giveaway

The Foundation increased their giving to feed 1,300 families for the holiday season

The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation kicked off its season of giving on Thursday, November 21 by leading the largest food giveaway the Foundation has ever executed. Dirk, Jessica and the family were flanked by countless volunteers as they fed 1,300 families in a food insecure area of South Dallas.

Texas supermarket chain H-E-B helped make it all possible through its partnership with the Foundation. The grocery partner even surprised each family with a generous gift card to assist with other food needs throughout the holiday season.

“With children being out of school around the holidays we believe it is important to not just give these families a meal, but to also stock their pantries and refrigerators,” said Dirk Nowitzki. “We’re especially grateful to H-E-B for generously supplementing our event with extra food items this year.”

Held once again at the Mark Cuban Heroes Center, residents in this area have seen many of the local grocery options close in recent years making an already food-insecure area even more of a food desert. The Foundation recognizes that our neighbors in this area often struggle with this most basic need.

“Food insecurity is still an issue, especially with inflation continuing, childcare costs rising and student loan payments resuming – it’s a tough time,” said Trina Terrell Andrews, CEO of the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center. “The Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center and our partners hope that this gesture helps as families and friends come together for the holidays.”

It was another successful event for the Foundation’s initiative created in May of 2020 to address the difficult times for families in this underserved area of Dallas. With each passing car, there was gratitude on each smiling face and their greetings of appreciation told the story.
